STV visit Tayside Support Services

Last week STV came to visit our team in Tayside as part of their investigations into effective responses to Scotland’s Drug Death emergency.

The ‘Crossreach Recovery Community’ is a group that works with people to help them stay on track and to go on in their recovery, avoiding relapse.  As part of this, we run a community café, in the Coldside area of Dundee, run by people in recovery and those affected by a loved one’s addiction. The cafe is a safe place, where you can purchase homemade food at a reasonable price plus a ‘pay it forward scheme’ which helps people who can’t manage the cost. Many activities help people relax and enjoy the safe space. The team are grateful to have the support of an NHS ‘well-being nurse’ who attends on the last Friday of each month, offering support and advice, blood pressure / weight checks and can arrange appointments for their own clinics.

Lucille, service manager of Tayside Support Services said:

People can come with parents, siblings and friends, this allows mum, for example, to begin to understand the difficulties her loved one faces. We have a volunteer who works with ‘Voicability’ a service to help people with benefits, and we also work with a new charity called ‘Giving Back’ which helps with mental health and lots of other things.’

Vic Walker, Adult Care Director said:

We know that for many people the chance to access rehab is vital. Several of the volunteers at the café are people who have benefitted from time at rehab and are now maintaining their own recovery through helping here at this Recovery Community and encouraging others in the process.
