Location
The Walter & Joan Gray is situated in the waterfront conservation area of the village of Scalloway. The Unit overlooks the busy harbour and is only a short walk to the local shops and post office.

Accommodation
The Walter & Joan Gray is a residential care home for 16 older people, one of the bedrooms is for the use of short stay clients. All rooms are single with en-suite shower and toilet. Residents can have a television and telephone in their room if they wish. There are three small lounges available for use, one with a television and radio, a quiet lounge and the other is the main lounge on the ground floor.. There is a dining room where all meals are served. The Unit has a laundry which provides a laundry service to all residents if wished.

  • To enable Service Users to retain their independence and maximise their potential within a safe, secure and caring environment.

  • To provide the opportunity for social interaction whilst recognising choice and the right to privacy
  • To promote choice in all aspects of daily life
  • To maintain the dignity of Service Users at all times
  • To offer an individual needs led service by appropriately trained staff
  • To value and respect Service Users regardless of gender, culture, faith or social background

Individual Care Plan
You will be involved in devising your personal plan which will be tailored to meet your individual needs

Family Involvement
Your family will be encouraged to participate in your care wherever possible, provided you have agreed to this.

Community Involvement
The Walter & Joan Gray is part of the community and we are included when preparations are being made for local events. We will encourage and support you to maintain your links in the community.

Other Services include

  • Daily Devotions for those who wish to attend
  • Weekly Church Service for those who wish to attend
  • Meaningful Activities for individuals
  • Residents Meetings giving you an opportunity to have your say on Entertainment, Outings, Menus etc
  • A Friends Group who raise funds for the Home and Residents
  • Reviews of your Care involving you and those involved in your care
  • NHS professionals (visit the home on request)
  • Inspected by the SCWIS twice annually

Day Centre
Within the Service, and separate from the residential area, is a facility for Day Care.   This has up to ten places and operates five days a week to meet demand.

A wide range of activities and support is offered and enables the client to meet with others and enjoy a stimulating environment.

Transport to and from daycare will be arranged for you.

Respite Care
The Walter & Joan Gray has 1 single, en-suite bedroom for the use of short stay clients.  

Management & Staffing

Management
Walter and Joan Gray is managed by CrossReach (Church of Scotland Social Care). 

Staff
All staff are recruited in line with the Crossreach recruitment policy and are  are employed subject to an Enhanced Disclosure.

Crossreach is committed to the ongoing training and development of all staff.

Admission Procedure

Criteria
Walter and Joan Gray Care Home is for older people who require care and support. An assessment of your needs will be completed by a member of staff using Shetland Island Council "With You, For You" assessment form.

Costs
Prior to your admission, your ability to pay will be assessed by the Social Work Department.  At present the total weekly charge is  £818, you will be entitled to free personal care at £159 per week. The maximum you will be required to pay is £659 per week.

This does not include any personal expenses such as hairdressers, opticians, private telephone calls, holidays, entertainment outwith the unit, taxis etc.

Day Care Clients are required to pay £2.50 per day for their lunch.

Referrals Procedure
If you wish to be considered as a resident at The Walter & Joan Gray, you should contact either the Manager or Senior Care Worker.

If you wish to be considered as a day care client at the Walter and Joan Gray, you should contact the Day Care Senior Care Worker.
