Transforming personal triumph into fundraising success and community impact
In a recent conversation with Ami, we had the privilege of learning about her incredible journey of completing the Singapore half marathon and raising an impressive £1600 for St. Margaret's, a CrossReach care home that holds a special place in her heart. Ami's dedication to CrossReach is not only inspiring but also a testament to the impact that people can make when they set their minds to it!
Ami's journey began when her husband encouraged her to explore something more endurance based. Initially considering a 10k run, she found herself persuaded to take on the challenge of a half marathon – 21km. The decision to turn her personal challenge into a fundraiser for St. Margaret's came from a deep desire to contribute to an organisation that had made a significant positive impact on her family.
Ami's connection to St. Margaret's is personal, as her grandfather spent his last two years in the care home and her grandmother who still lives in the care home. Reflecting on the exceptional care he received, Ami expressed her gratitude for the "real-life angels" working at St. Margaret's. The staff's dedication, respect, and efforts to create a vibrant and engaging environment for residents left a lasting impression on Ami.
Activities ranging from special occasions like Valentine's Day, Christmas, Easter, and Halloween, to more personalised experiences such as nail SPA sessions, showcase the care home's commitment to enhancing residents' quality of life. Ami's grandmother, despite struggling with memory loss, finds comfort in the church services on Sundays, singing along to hymns she still remembers.
“It gives me great comfort since I live so far in Singapore to know that my Grandma is taken such good care of.”
The funds raised by Ami's half marathon will contribute to upgrading the coffee seating area at St. Margaret's, highlighting the tangible impact that individual efforts can have on enhancing the well-being of care home residents.
Motivation and Milestones:
Ami's advice for those considering embarking on a similar journey is both practical and profound. She encourages setting achievable goals, taking it day by day, and gradually building confidence.
“Take it day by day. I started with 3k then 6k and week by week I added 2k and your confidence builds over time and becomes doable “
The incorporation of fundraising alongside personal challenges provides an added layer of motivation, as Ami found during her own journey.
The actual race day brought forth moments of emotional intensity for Ami. Facing challenges at the 15k mark, she tapped into the deep-rooted reasons behind her efforts – her grandparents. Ami drew strength from the memory of her loved ones and the supporters lining the streets, showcasing the power of determination and purpose.
Ami's story serves as an invitation to all those seeking a meaningful way to make a difference. Whether it's through running, walking, or any other form of personal challenge, the key lies in setting a goal, staying committed, and allowing the deeper purpose to fuel your journey.
By supporting CrossReach, you can contribute to a community of care and compassion, making a positive impact on people lives. Take inspiration from Ami's incredible journey and consider how your efforts, big or small, can create change in the world.
