The job of School Janitor is important here and it’s something that everyone notices right from the start.  Working as part of the close-knit team you will be responsible for the upkeep of the building and grounds and escort tradesmen when they are in the building.

Main Function

All those employed within the Crossreach Children & Family Services will, with a commitment to our Christian values, work as part of a holistic team to deliver a service that ensures that the needs of the children, young people and their families, whom we support are fully met.  You will be expected to work to the highest professional standards of those working within the Children’s workforce and adhere to professional codes of practice of SSSC, GTCS and other relevant professional bodies; ensuring that the aims and objectives of Crossreach and those specific to Children & Family Services and the section within which you are based are met.

Main Duties

Take the necessary action to ensure that the provision of the service is supported and facilitated by a smooth operation of the buildings and surrounding grounds, ensuring minimal disruption to the daily activities.

Undertake the necessary maintenance and cleaning procedures to ensure that all bodily fluid/spillages are dealt with in accordance with Service guidelines and that all of the campus is presented at a high standard.

Working in a cooperative way with colleagues and external agencies, take the necessary action to ensure that the campus and grounds are opened at appropriate times, appropriately monitored during hours of opening and that they are secure at the end of the working day.

Take a proactive approach to security and safety so that appropriate action is taken either by you or the appropriate person, when risks are identified, including liaison with the police, e.g. in relation to unauthorised entry or vandalism.

Ensure the safety of the campus by liaising, as required, with external contractors, working effectively with colleagues, students and members of the public and by participating appropriately in safety tests and procedures as required including during evening/weekend/holiday opening hours.

Periodically checking the lighting system throughout the building ensuring that internal and external areas are adequately lit including replacing lighting materials and fuses in accordance with agreed procedures.

Monitoring the condition of, and take action on, the heating and lighting systems to ensure they support the smooth running of the campus.

Ensuring that all areas of the campus are set out/cleared as required for their range of uses, all the while ensuring that the appropriate health and safety procedures are observed including the transportation of materials and equipment in accordance with manual handling procedures.

Ensuring that litter and graffiti is cleared regularly from inside the building and from all external surfaces within the boundaries of the establishment, including all weather surfaces and soft playing areas.  To ensure the grounds of schools/playing fields are kept tidy and litter free.

Clearing pathways/take remedial action under the direction of the Facilities Coordinator in the event of snow and frost.

Undertake the necessary inspections and tests e.g. Legionella tests, Asbestos, hardwire electrical, as per agreed schedules.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • SVQ Level 2 or equivalent experience
  • Trade qualification
  • Valid current driving licence
  • The postholder must possess basic computer literacy skills including use of Microsoft Office and the internet.
