CrossReach Tom Allan service is a generic adult counselling service located at the Tom Allan Centre in central Glasgow. Our counsellors use their unique skills and expertise to enable their clients to explore their difficulties and support them to get to where they want to be. The services offered include; counselling for mental wellbeing, counselling for emotional support and one-to-one counselling.
You will be able to work remotely or from our premises at the Tom Allan Centre. Clients are offered appointments with our Tom Allan volunteers on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays between 9am and the last appointment being offered at 3:30pm (3pm on Fridays). It may be possible to make provisions for people who need a different day due to training commitments, this can be discussed at interview. If you want to work online have you completed an ACTO approved online training course or have evidence that you meet the BACP online competencies? If you are a student, do you have sign off from your training institution that you are distance counselling ready? Can you work from home (with access to a laptop/PC, phone and a secure Wi-Fi connection)?
You must be available to volunteer a minimum of 3* clinical hours, delivering either Counselling/Therapy, Training or Supervision and complete all associated case work. You will be expected to commit to the Tom Allan service for a minimum of two years. You must be available to attend and contribute to monthly supervision and meet your professional body’s supervision requirements. You will be expected to provide the name and contact details of your individual external supervisor. A discussion will be held at interview stage about your availability for our online monthly group supervision groups.

To apply for this voluntary position, you must be qualified with a diploma in counselling or equivalent OR if you are a student, have your fitness to practice signed off on a postgraduate diploma.
Tom Allan Centre has gained COSCA Recognition and adheres to COSCA’s Statement of Ethics and Code of Practice. All our practitioners must be either, qualified and registered with a Professional Standards Authority (PSA) recognised professional body (e.g. BACP, COSCA, BAAT, UKCP), or in the process of gaining their qualification. The PSA assesses organisations that register health and social care practitioners ensuring your practitioner meets your needs.
Interviews will be held on the 31st August and the 1st September.
Main Function
Our CrossReach Counselling volunteers work across a range of specialities and locations; face-to-face, online and over the phone. We work in supportive, holistic teams that deliver exceptional Counselling services to clients when they need it most, whilst consistently working to the highest professional and ethical standards.
Main Duties
- To provide a professional counselling service to clients
- To operate and work within CrossReach Counselling Services policy and procedures, including Confidentiality, Data Protection, Health and Safety and Safeguarding
- To liaise effectively with your colleagues (e.g. service manager and administrative support)
- To complete mandatory training provided by CrossReach
- To constructively contribute to supervision as per Service Supervision Agreement
Qualifications
Essential:
- Qualified with a Diploma in Counselling, Therapy or equivalent (or in training and working towards achieving this).
- Membership of (or working towards membership of) a recognised professional body on a PSA accredited register e.g. HCPC, COSCA, BACP, BABCP or UKCP
- For those working remotely, to have undertaken a minimum of 80 hours CPD with an ACTO online training provider and/or completed sufficient training to demonstrate competence to meet BACP telephone and e-counselling competence. For students, distance counselling readiness sign-off from your training institution
Desirable:
- Qualified and experienced supervisors
- COSCA-Acredited trainers
- Specialist experience and training qualification in the following fields; substance use, trauma, perinatal, children and young people, couples/relationship.
