A Little Help Goes a Long Way: How Whiteinch is Making a Difference

With the Make a Difference fund, staff at the Whiteinch Move on Service can request for small funds for things that will benefit the people they support. Recently, one of our service users shared how this initiative has helped him on his recovery journey:

“I came to CrossReach from Calderglen Rehab. I wanted to resettle in Glasgow to get away from my past life but don’t know the city at all and I’ve got lost a few times!

Part of my own Recovery plan in my head was that I would get a bike to get around meetings and other stuff. I’m no’ keen on buses and I wanted to explore Glasgow and I wanted to exercise. When I came to Whiteinch Move On they said I could use one of their bikes and I got about on that bike every day and I can feel the power coming back in my legs. I’m quicker on the bike than on buses and it saves me money. I take the bike on the train with me to Aftercare and I use it to go fishing in the Forth & Clyde canal and the River Clyde and River Kelvin.

When my new bike, which I get to keep, arrived it felt like Christmas! It’s a belter! It’s the one I wanted and I chose it myself after shopping on-line with staff. Its perfect and it’s the colour I wanted. I feel the best I’ve been since I was a teenager. Since then I was in active addiction to drugs for 23 years. I hated that life in addiction, I wanted out.  I need structure and the bike allows me to do that. The bike gives me freedom. I feel an alpha state, it’s hard to explain, getting from A to B without knowing how I got there. I’m grateful and full of gratitude for the old bike but especially the new bike. I’m going to miss the old bike as I got attached to it."
