'Cheerio' to a much loved manager

A rainy day couldn’t dampen the celebrations in Ardrossan today [28 February 2020] as South Beach House celebrated the commitment and service of manager Margaret Cassidy, as she retires following an incredible 45 years of service with CrossReach.

It was 1975 when Margaret entered South Beach House to begin her role as what is now known as a House Keeping Assistant.

“I do remember walking in the door and thinking I didn’t like South Beach House. It was a great big home with all these older people in it – but when you’re 20 that’s what you see,” said Margaret when she was recognised for 40 years’ service and for being the CrossReach Employee of the Year in 2015” She went on to explain, “Now that I’m 60, it’s just followed me all my life, and it’s been such a big part of my life and I just love my job.”

45 years on from that first day, Margaret has held a wide range of posts in the care home including Cook, Care Worker, Team Leader, Deputy Manager and Manager.

With a commitment to learning and professional development, Margaret’s achievements have included the attainment of SVQ L4 Management Award, PDA in Administration of Medication and a Diploma in Dementia Care Practice through the University of Stirling.

In addition, we could talk at length about how she has successfully led her team to bring about continuous improvements within the home, gaining it a reputation for a high quality of service delivery within North Ayrshire.

We could also share in detail about the positive feedback from the residents, their families and loved ones, and from the external audits such as Customer Service Excellence and the Care Inspectorate.

However, at the heart of Margaret’s 45 years of service has been the people who call South Beach House ‘home’ and the team of employees and volunteers who provide the support; and that was what was evident today.

As the tributes and memories poured in, invoking hearty laughter and a fair few tears, the well wishes from everyone present was testimony to the legacy she is leaving behind.   Allan Logan, Director of Older People Services and Viv Dickenson, CEO summed it up as follows:

“[Margaret is] a strong determined outspoken person with an outstanding work ethic who cares for each individual resident.”
--Allan Logan

“Margaret, you demonstrate Christian love in action.  Thank you.  You will be very missed.
--Viv Dickenson

She will indeed be missed, but we are delighted to note that whilst she is moving on to her well-deserved retirement, her 'farewell' is more of a 'cheerio' as Margaret will remain with us as a mentor and an ambassador for CrossReach.

Thank you.
