Heart for Art at the General Assembly 2024

Artist and volunteer

Exhibiting the work is an important aspect of Heart for Art as this demonstrates the value and beauty of what people living with dementia can do. Last year 125 participants along with 70 carers took part in sessions across Scotland. A specially curated exhibition capturing many of these creations is currently on display at the Martin Hall as part of the activity of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland 2024. All attendees are warmly invited to come along to see the work.

We know from research and our own experience that creativity stimulates conversation, aids concentration and even improves memory retention. With a pencil or paintbrush in hand, we see people with dementia expressing themselves freely and finding new ways to communicate. In the company of art tutors and others with dementia, our artists find friendship, purpose and acceptance. As their confidence grows, so do their smiles.

A Heart for Art open day was recently held at Dunfermline Abbey, here’s what our volunteers, families and artists had to say.
